The GMC CCKW

Hi guys.

Just wanting to find some information on the GMC Command Post vehicles. A rare beast but would anyone know of any information or where I should be looking?

Jack, at this time you seem to be the only one thats heard of it, do you have a "G" number or any other reference ? Perhaps not a factory item , but a field mod?

I think it is field mod actually and I have only seen it in a book and it states that it was built by and for the 2nd Armoured and was used throughtout the ETO and North Africa.

So perhaps I can work from the picture?!

Perhaps one of our French friends could pop down to Saumur and shoot some pix for you. Beware though when I saw it in 2001 it was in what looked like a post war African fit out, with post war markings and modifications.

Perhaps the internals are original but it would be hard to tell. Its pretty basic, a sink, a map table, and a small wardrobe affair, and a couchette/bed. Definatley a one man box and not really designed for family camping.

Surprisingly I dont remember it having a radio fit.

Le Musee des Blindes is worth a trip anyway. Go on spoil yourself.

I'm just a bit nervous that theirs is not a "period" piece. All though no doubt based on a vintage chassis, I just got the feeling it was more a Algerian crissis model dating from that same conflict in the early '50's. Nothing really said ww2 about it, that I remember.

I didnt have a camera with me at the time, I was just sort of passing thro.

Think you should organise an HMVF trip mate. Loire is a very nice area. Dont forget to invite our US friends, some of whom may not be HMVF members.

To be honest, I dont know. Saumur is a faily new museum and is only about 25 years old. That just happens to be about the same age as the French started to release their Jimmy's. I did notice that some of their exhibits are more " in the style" of, rather than historically "correct".

Like the Duxford Jimmy with the post war radiator grill.

He** if its what floats your boat, go do it, nobody will ever know if it is or isnt cosha. I get the feeling anything goes as it was most probably at the whim of some general or other who wanted ...........a love nest.

Let me know the dates for the tour. Take in Oradour as well.
