The GMC CCKW

Hi List, I have a couple of CCKW's and wanted to know what the last couple of digits were in the serial number stamped in the frame. I understand they designate the model type. The first vin is:

CCKW 353 I59886 AI anyone know the year of this truck also?

CCKW 353 456179 I I am told this would be a possible Jan 1945 truck. What would the I stand for. thanks

The first ser # 353-159886 A1 is November 1942 (happy birthday) The A1 means it is a cargo body non winch truck with the 1 meaning it came with split type axles. The other ser#353 456179 ?1 is January 1945 , I put a ? mark because there is no I on the legend to model serial number chart, the possiable letters are A B C D E F G L what does the truck have for a body and does it have a winch The 1 means it also should have the split type axles vs the banjo type which would have a 2 suffix, The 353 stands for 164" long wheel base .

Thanks Jim for the welcome and the info. I believe that I am new to this forum as a registored member but thought that I had visited it once before. Anyhow I took another look at the second serial number-
CCKW353 456179. the last two digits are what look like two capital I's. The funny thing is the first ( I ) is actually laying on its side. I thought it was a dash mark at first glance but it is the same stamping as the second ( I ) which is standing straight. I assumed that what looks like a capital I to me is supposed to represent the number one (1). Maybe a possible mis-stamp on the first (I). The entire serial number is very clear and easy to read. The truck does have the split axles. The truck is an ex-rural fire department truck an the original cargo bed or what ever was on the truck was replaced with a home made bed designed to hold a water tank for the fire department. I plan to eventually replace with a regular cargo bed. Curious to know what the first (I) after the serial number might have meant. thanks Dan

With the stamping laying on its side it could very well have been a mis- stamp after all they were applied by hand, I have seen other stamping that lets say were not very straight. I will though wish you good luck with your search for a original ww11 cargo body for they are not impossiable but are very hard to find in good shape, beware there are M series cargo bodies out there but are wider and in my opinion just don't look right on a cckw. If you can post some pictures of both trucks would love to see them As to being curious as to what the first ( I) might have meant according to the serial number legend there wasn't any first ( I) only letters came before a number Thats what I know maybe some one else can shine some light on this

Hi Guys,

The "I" on it's side is a dash,not a number or a mis-stamp. Trucks with a chassis number which ends with -1 or -2 without the letter prefix were delivered from the factory as a chassis cab so a special body could be fitted,eg compressor.

Hi Guys, thanks for all of your replys. With the info provided it looks like this truck started off as just the cab and chassis from the factory. I will have to look the rear frame section over to see if there is any factory modifications from standard. I have the Nov. 42 CCKW that I can use as a reference I would think. I do know that there are two long rods attached to the top of the frame but I am not sure if maybe they were added by the fire department for strenght. Hi Guys,

I did see "Rangers" post on the other forum. I must say I have yet to see a CCKW -1 or -2 with a reinforced chassis and none of the parts books refer to any specific shop van or compressor chassis parts.

My compressor truck(chassis# 162610-1) has the same chassis as any other CCKW.

I'm not saying there were no reinforced CCKW chassis,but certainly I have yet to see one on an original CCKW compressor or shop van.

Hi Matt, I took a quick look at my frame but not sure if there is any extra reinforcement other than would be found on any regular CCKW. There is two steel rods mounted on the top part of the frame that run down the lenght of it but I think this may have been added by the fire department. I plan to take a close look as I have another 42 CCKW that I can compare the frame with. But with the serial number ending in - I, I think that the others maybe correct that this truck came from the factory as a cab/chassis and then had something else added to the frame. I am planning on tracking down the rural fire department that had this truck some 10 to 15 years ago to see if there might be someone there who might know some history on the truck. Just curious to know. Might even run into some extra spare parts. Later. Dan

Hey, thanks guys. Looks like I can now post photo of my CCKWs and what have you. Sure makes thing easier when you want to show someone a specific part or as questions about identifing what ever. Anyhow the Red CCKW is my Jan 45 built ex- fire department truck. This is the one with the serial number ending with a dash - and a I. When I got the truck I picked up an original WWII bed that is pretty rough but figured I might use it on this truck. Not sure at this point. The same bed is now sitting on my other CCKW truck which is my Nov. 42 built unit. As you can see it is in pretty rough condition. The rear axle on my 45 has had a major failure. I believe the gears locked up inside and the drive shaft twisted off right were it goes into the axle. This is a split type. I plan on swapping the rear axle out of the 42 into the 45 truck. I am still planing on getting the 42 truck up and in running condition. I guess I just like the challange. The 42 has all of the engine components still in place and I was shocked to find that the motor is not froze up. Attached is a photo of what it looked like the first time I saw it at an estate auction. It was an old Batam Shelds truck and had a scoop shovel mounted on the back. later Dan
