The GMC CCKW

I have noticed on both a CCKW and an M5-H6 that there appears to be remnants of two welds on each side of the frame, shaped like:

About 5 inches wide, and 3.5 inches tall (guesstimate)...

What is/was the purpose of these?

Were on the frame? On the dump trucks (Tippers for you lads in Europe) that were returned to the states, many had a bracket welded onto the frame between the rear dual wheels that held a post war mud guard / flap between the wheels. (Tippers did not have mud flaps - like the cargo trucks did)

The collectors here in the US almost always cut this postwar modification off. It leaves a weld track like you describe.

Or is there something else???

Also, was the frame on this truck cut short?

... picture is showing my hasty craftsmanship in using a solid piece of wood for the bottom, in addition to not even adding the tool box...

Did I mention that I worked from 9:00AM until 4:00AM to get this truck parade ready?

From looking at your picture I would say your frame has been cut and that weld patch is a result of a mod for what ever reason. Your body looks to be in the right place due to the lineup with the gas tank. From the flush part of the body mounting bracket to the corner of the cab mntg bracket is about a 5" space , and the rear bumpers should stick out aprox 1" beyond the body with the pintle hook about flush with the tool box that your body is missing.The overall length of a 353 a1 a2 b1 b2 wo/w is 256 1/4. You have done a great job with your truck and you should be able to fix the length of the frame without to much trouble you just need to find a donor piece of frame and two bumpers , a good weld job and some smooth grinding , give it some paint and presto looks as good as new. Now finding a tool box that might be your bigger challenge but anyway she looks great and keep up the good work

Thanks for the comments and encouragement... too bad about the frame, I'll rig something up for the toolbox and mudflaps eventually... but right now it's onto another project...

Not sure if that'll happen, might not even have the box off by that time...

I managed to get most of the U-bolts off but I've also got two jeeps that have been sitting for a while half taken apart... too many projects...

Thanks for the U-bolt, definitely have been needing one of them for like a year now (just now getting to asking around for one... )...

That must be for a steel bed CCKW, becuase my toolbox was a mix of metal and wood parts, a true mess, I might still consider that option though...

The tool box Bensinger has is not the one that is in back of the cargo body,his looks to be the one that goes uder the front seat, its not the same puppy To find one for the cargo box will be no easy task.
