Help with USA Registration Number
Posted: Tue Apr 08, 2008 1:50 pm
by 42cckw
I have taken my hood off my truck to repair minor dings and dents , and I sanded trough the layers of paint to see if the original Reg number was visable, and found nothing . My truck was rebuilt by Rootes of London in 1955, so it may have a replacement hood. My question is can anyone help me come up with a close as possible and period correct number. My truck is a correct match to its serial number which is 71,993 A1, I belive the Mfg date will put it at early January 1942. I will be painting the finished hood in a couple of weeks and would like to apply the WW2 hood markings , any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Hey Jim
Do you have the contract number from the data plate ?
Looking in GMC Trucks at War from Portrayal Press,
I found an incomplete list of ser#s and hood #s but....there maybe enough data to "estimate" a "possible "hood number based on the ,1942, 353, A1,but the contract# is as important as the rest of the info.

Hi John
There is no contract number on my plate , and I have the GMC trucks at war book and have studied it at length , and have found two close possible ones ( W-398-QM-10890 on page 11 but falls just short of my ser# or W-398-QM-11595 on page 13 but gives no ser# , this contract also says 13522 trucks were built with 1608 closed cabs and 2227 trucks with 1619 open cabs. Model year says 1942-3 but it must be late 42 to include 43 models and my truck is early 42

so you see where I am comming from

what do you think

Ok
How about this, Jim
Contract #10890 is 12BH for 353-A1
Contract # 11595 is 12CG for 353-A1
Go to page 23 and 24 and look up all the assigned hood # groups for the 12 BH series and the 12CG ( there are several )
Your hood number may not be correct but at least it would be in the CORRECT number groupings.
Hope this helps

Hi,
I am new to this forum, but I have a question. I'm trying to find out my proper hood number for my truck. It is a '42 CCKW-353 closed cab. The mfg. serial # is 127066-2. This # is on the frame and the data plate, but I can't find any info in this thread that would tell me what hood # it is. Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

No I don't know anybody in the MVCC. I've had this truck for two years but have been slowly working on it off and on. I finally found a title and was able to get it plated. I found it from an older gentleman in Laporte, CO (just north of Ft. Collins). It has been a project (needless to say) just to get decent tires on the 10 split rims, do bodywork, and get it painted (in my backyard). I'll have to check into the MVCC.

russ is the guy in loveland, who owns the tanks,
he also has a dukw,
he might have some cckw parts, but I'v never really paid attention.
fred has a k-53 van so he might have parts also.
Im not a chevy guy so I cant help with numbers,
over on the dodge forum we usually have to break down and do the math
to come up with somthing close, for a hood number.
