I imagine Joel Gopan will be able to answer that. He is very knowledgeable about these old trucks.

I believe they were refurbed in Europe, since virtually all German industry had been destroyed and also a great deal in the occupied countries. It was vital that industry recovered as quickly as possible and one way of doing this was to set factories to work refurbing vehicles which were, inmany cases ,worn out by the end of hostilities and in need of a complete rebuild. As the troops were gradually with drawn from a large part of Europe fewer vehicles were needed and they were then used to equip friendly countries armies, this was all a part of the 'Marshall Aid' plan.

In the early 50s as the US was converting to the M-Series, many were shipped directly to European Governments as they were turned in. I have a photo of Maine National Guard CCKWs and MBT trailers, dated March 52, being loaded onto gondola cars and going direct to Europe. Others had depot rebuilds and were stored at major Army Depots well into the 60s before being sent over as military assistance. What is neat is that I bought 20 NOS Gov't Surplus early Die Cast Zenith Carburetors a few years back, they were dated 1989 and were obviously destined for military assistance. The US Army had many parts manufactured for WWII Trucks up into the 60s and 70s. One NOS fender on my MB was dated 1967.
You will find tags on major components of recent surplus CCKWs with the name ERGMA on them They were a rebuilder with plants in many nations that rebuilt componenys on contract.I had a CCKW 270 engine from ERGMA located in Tunisia.

I have the same question about my CCKW, because my engine is
rebuild in 1952 in the USA. I know that says nothing but the castingdate
is only 1 or 2 weeks older than the estimated DOD.
Ive heard that
vehicles that came back in the fiftys where sprayed black with a coating
to prevent rusting on the shipdeck.
