On the passenger side frame rail, a few inches back from the front spring shackel, is a stamped number - 238
Its not any part of the SN (that's farther back) but its in the same font as the SN, but maybe half the size. It also is stamped almost verticle, going up the frame rail, not horizontal like the SN.
Any ideas what it means?

Most likely an ID number for the frame rail. You will see similar numbers on Jeep frame components.
