Over here in the UK I see a lot of GMC's with 'Prestone' written on their bonnets, could anyone shed any light on this. What does it mean?

Is just an UK thing?

Prestone was one of the antifreeze liquid they used during the war. It's usually followed by a date, for exemple "Prestone 44". It means they have refilled the antifreeze in 1944.

You can see also "Winterized 44" or "antifreeze 43"

At last, something that has been bothering us for years and of course, once it is pointed out, it is obvious.

"Prestone 44" is exactly what I have seen.

Prestone was the premiere coolant of WWII. The famous North American P-51 Mustang fighter used Prestone as a coolant in the equally famous Rollys Royce Merlin engine that powered the fighter. The radiator was called The Prestone Cooler by the pilots because of the fluid used .

Not all trucks got marked this way, but it was an SOP thing in ETO.Normal stencil size was 1". Collectors seem to add the marking to dress up their trucks, hell, if you can hang enough "do dads" and give your truck enough stencil markings, you will not have to invest in an expensive paint job.
