MUFFLERS

Post by joel gopan »

Did you know that there is a difference in tone between manufacturers of original GI Issue CCKW Mufflers? Problem is that with the limited availability of GI Issue mufflers, you have no choice.

I have a NOS Muffler on the shelf, how can I tell its GI Issue?
There is no tag or sticker on the muffler.

If the inlet and outlet are the proper size, chances are that it is for the CCKW, as it is the only truck that I have noticed that uses those dimensions. There will be either the GM number stamped on it or the ORD Part No.. You may encounter foreign mufflers but they are rare.

I have some stored on a shelf, will get to them in day or two. Length of body(Shell) varies between manufactures, Overall Lengths will be similar. Data is embossed in raised letters, and a date code may be evident.

Probably be over the weekend. The muffler for all CCKWS except the Water and Fuel truck versions were the GM 2076479, that was superseded by Muffler GM-2199800. I do not know all the manufacturers, but most had GM-2199800 embossed in raised letters, with an Arrow to indicate the "Front" or "Inlet", and there may be a date. The one on my truck says 10-52. I believe one of my spares has a 43 or 44 Date. There must have been overseas and stateside processing as some have Cosmoline on them. I degrease mine and paint them Hi Temp Aluminum, as that way they look fresh all the time and do not turn rusty.

I should be able to get the Pics Sunday, Have been catching up on chores and a little quality time with me wife.

Corne Have you considered whether it might be a Bedford item you have. Some TK Bedfords used an almost identical unit to the CCKW one, we use them in the UK.

Hi Degsy

No I didnt consider that, the guy I bought it from said it was a NOS
CCKW part and it was stocked on the cckw parts shelf.
I never checked the dimensions because I thrust him, he told
me that it was a postwar NOS GI Issue part, with the orginal sound.
But I wouldnt care if it is not a vintage CCKW muffler, as long
as it fits, looks and sounds like a CCKW muffler, Iam happy.
