The GMC CCKW

My truck came with a tool rack that i've seem in pictures with shovels etc. It was mounted on the left side of the hood area. Is this correct for a 42 closed cab. and what tools went in these carriers. Also can someone give me the NAPA part # for a replacement muffler for the CCKW. Thanks.

NO NAPA Part for Correct muffler for CCKW, as best I can tell, there was no Civ equivalent . You will come close on OD and possibly length, but none will have correct outlet size. You will drive the counterman nuts looking for what he has no clue about, and you will leave NAPA disappointed. frank V in Canada has these, will kill $80-$100 by the time it gets delivered. M-series REO goes on, but outlet is Too big. I have pics of originals I have on shelf, but no time to post.

Hi Mike.

My tool rack is was on the left hand side when I bought and it will go back there when it is finished. The tool racks were 'field' fitted so you will see them all of the place.

I have seen them on the foot plate, both sides of the engine and on the cargo body so I think it is your choice Toll wise I think I am correct in saying that you had an axe, a shovel and a pick but I have seen them with sledges in.

The Pioneer Rack on the Hood Side panel was not all that common during the war, many CCKWs built before 44 had none. The Open Cab at some point started leaving the factory with mounting brackets on the running boards. The Closed Cabs left the factory with none. The Army during early part of WWII had a mounting kit to place the Pioneer Bracket on the side of the CCKW Cargo Body. If you look at WWII photos, you will see many CCKWs without provision for Pioneer Tool Racks. Many CCKWs that were surplused in Europe in the 60s thru 90s had a pioneer tool bracket mounted on the hood side panel, many of these brackets are not made in USA. WWII issue brackets had the retainers that held the tip of the shovel made from round stock. Post war used flat stock. The mounting hole pattern on late brackets is slightly different from WWII. The Driver training Film available from Vintage Video depicts some early CCKWs with the Pioneer Tool bracket on the Cargo Body side, but one has to be fast to view it, as they are just blips.

My open cab has the tools mounted on the running boards. Shovel on driver side, ax and pick on passanger side. I think the pioneer rack mounted on the engine panel is pretty sexy looking though, kind of like having a water bucket on the jerry can.
