Eighth USAAF trucks.

Post by Matt »

If you look at WW2 pictures of Eighth Air Force trucks in England you will notice several local/unit modifications and a real mix of trucks being used, the film Target for Today has many good examples.some of the modifications include....

Cargo CCKW's with a set of folding steps fitted to the inside of the tailgate to make it easier for aircrew to climb in/out while wearing their kit.

Jeeps with a field made hard tops, appear to be both wood and alloy.

There was a real mixture of trucks used by the Eighth too,Studebaker 6+4's,CCKW's in 352 and 353,even some with gun rings in the cab (but no mount),some units had Canadian Chevrolet trucks, many used British Austin K2 Ambulances alongside the Dodge WC-54's.they also used Fordson crash trucks.

If you havn't seen Target for Today go out and buy it!

If one would realize the statistics of all the Combat and their Support units in the UK for the Army, Army AF, Navy, Marines, it would be hard to comprehend. It amounts to tens of thousands of personnel, and the logistics for whatever it takes to Equip, Feed, House, Clothe, repair anything involved. There were tens of thousands of Trucks, Trailers, Jeeps in just rolling equipment. Trucks were from all production batches early thru late.
