WHATS YOUR NAME

Post by joel gopan »

WWII GIs had a fondness for catchy names, some related to loved ones, some were aimed at the Army in fun. The names were usually displayed on the cowl. It was also common for the driver to paint his name below the driver's window.
Anybody have a name on their CCKW?

This one is easy for me.

Letting the cat out of the bag....so to speak.

My CCKW will be named "The Big Bad Wolf". One of my Dad's 15th AF B-17's was named this. It used the mid-30's Disney caricature of the Big Bad Wolf riding a bomb with Air crew helmet and flight jacket

I am unable to find a picture of his nose art. Here is a picture from the Disney cartoon.

Hopefully I can find someone locally to do the nose art.

In the 90s I had decided on displaying "Willie" or "Joe" on the cowl of my CCKW. I spent many hours with Bill Mauldin on the phone and and thought it would be neat. My first call to Bill Mauldin was on a Christmas eve and went on for over an hour. We had a local sign painter who was painting cartoon characters on the cabs of truckers. I haven't done that yet, as I prefer a generic military truck.

Kevin,

That is the first thing that came to my mind when I read that  (I guess great minds do think alike  ).

The problem is that I have been humming that silly tune all day here while plowing snow.

I hold you responsible !!!

My 353 CCKW is named in honor of my great uncle, George Potter, who passed away last year. He was 89 and saw a lot of action in the Pacific (35th Inf, 25th ID) from before the War until his discharge in '46. He was top notch and so when he passed, my truck is named "Curious George".

My WC51 is called "Chuck Wagon" since it hauls my 57mm M1A2. My Uncle's older brother, Charles Potter, was in the 103rd FA, 26th ID during WW1 so I thought why not since the truck tows a cannon. He passed away in 1990.
