Christmas 1944

Post by dr deuce »

I heard on the news this AM that Concord NH has recorded the 2nd highest snow fall ever recorded for December ! :(

I was thinking about this tonight as I was preparing for the next storm Sunday. I went to move Annie the CCKW-Schield-Bantam crane. She had not been moved for the last 2 storms so the snow beside her and in front of her was about 14" deep and there was packed show under her. To add to the enjoyment, she still has only one driven rear end.

As I tried to get her out (without shoveling initially), she spun and slid sideways a little. My thoughts drifted off to what it must have been like around Bastogne that terrible winter 62 years ago trying to drive a 6 by in those conditions. Slipping and sliding, cold and miserable. Much the same as it was with Annie except If I could not get her out, it was not that big a deal and no one was shooting at me. Leaning out the open cab looking at the fron wheel spin, looking reaward and seeing the rear wheel spin. I jumped out into 14" of snow and grabbed a shovel and started to dig. Eventually she came out. She is a good truck, like all CCKWs :)
