Re: Iwo Jima Picture on Lead Page 2/15/2010
I was looking at the LST photo of troops on the way to Iwo. Probably Army rather than USMC, by the look of the Dodge and other gear.
Those boys are loaded and locked! Looks like a AAA outfit. I count at least 6 Quad Mount .50 Cal Units on trailers. Since the ship already had their own mounted anti aircraft gun emplacements, I suspect they loaded the Quad's on the open upper deck to allow troops to repair, train, test fire etc. The CCKW's that would have pulled them must be on the tank deck below.
An Armored or Infantry Division of the day, included in the Division Arty, an AAA Bn. It was authorized 4 batteries of 8 each quad 50's (32 Total) but they were usually the Half Track mounted version. So what is this unit?
Very Interesting Picture. Lot's of vehicle details to study.
