GAS CAN HOLDER

The WWII era Gas Can Holders were marked with the prefix 42-B-22590 in before the Stock number.

What does the "B" indicate?

This only a guess

Could the 42 be the year of "design "acceptance ?
And " B " the version of acceptance ( or second model )?

These ase "Official Stock Numbers"

The Letter relates to the first letter of the name of the part, which is a bracket. I have forgotten the meaning of the numbers, getting old.
Examples:
41-A-1277 Axe Chopping, single Bit, standard grade, 4 lb.
41-S-3170 Shovel. general Purpose, D=handle, plain back, No. 2
41-P-2962-7- Puller, wheel hub
41-P-1650 Pliers, combination, slip joint, wire cutting, 6 in.
8-P-5000 Pump,tire, hand,single cylinder, with air chuck
8 -B-11 Bag, spare parts kit container
17-T-805 Tape, friction, general use
42-T-13600 Tube, flexible nozzle, cam type---gas can nozzle

The Army did publish catalogs listing the thousands of tools and their Official Stock Number

If the gas can bracket is not stamped 42-B-22590, it is most likely a replacement.
