The GMC CCKW

One could use the assembly from a M-35 Series REO 2 1/2 Ton 6X6. It is a simple unit, and consists of a ratchet and cable device. The tire will hang in nearly the same manner.

I have one of these brackets on my pipeline truck and will check to see if a 750 X 20 Spare will not stick out too far. Don't go buy one till I double check. This idea just occured to me a moment ago. I also have one of these to sell.

Gotta drill new holes tho, and it will take a good HD Drill. I have one all off, and have to double check the shaft on the ratchet, it may stick out beyond the edge of a CCKW body and if so, it will "bite," and then everyone will use my name in vain.

Watch out for Wires, etc.

I have to admit that at first I was really surprised that this suggestion came from you, Mr. "Read the TM, Do What the TM says, and Do ONLY What the TM Says". Within moments though my brain switched into problem solving mode (namely that of having to drill additional holes in a perfectly good CCKW frame) while worrying about missing wires, brake lines etc.

While you're checking to see if the 7.50x20.00 tire and wheel will fit, you might think about this suggestion. How about an adapter plate, with bolt holes located to mate up to the CCKW frame, and another set to match up to the holes of the M35 spare carrier. That probably needs a little graphic explanation, so I'll see what I can work up.

BTW, this idea was just "published", so anyone thinking of stealing the idea and marketing it had better think twice!

That is how I would handle the situation as the frame is extremely hard to drill through. Good suggestion.

The Chassis should drill like butter. As for being proper, it is evident that some on this post are content with just a "driver" for a CCKW, as they have so indicated. I was just suggesting a way to have a spare tire bracket with limited funds. Why glob it up with all sorts of monkey rigging that will make the tire bracket which is already alittle wide even stick out farther. I have been watching the go around with how to ship parts from overseas and how it was going nowhere and this could be a solution,This is the first and last time I will suggest a non standard fix.

Main difference is that the tire is located just below and slightly under the chassis, instead of just above and and slightly over the chassis. It is a very simple installation. The exhaust may interfere with the installation, or it may not. If it works it will prevent a hernia from having to lift the spare into the cargo body.
