The GMC CCKW

One can easily see an apparant attrition rate in that photo. There are more than CCKW axles in the bodies though.

Joel is correct.

In blowing up the hi-res download that I have there is what appears to be another row of CCKW cargo beds (being used as storage bins) to the right of the photo. Also there is another shed row out of the picture to the left. Inside the shed row on the bottom is what looks to be (or was) rolliing chassis.

As Joel mentions thare is alot more there than just 2.5 ton stuff. Some big axles on the right.

Below the numbers 9 & 10 there appears to be a whole pile of trucks out in the background behind the shed.

This could be very late 1944 as there are no leaves on the trees and it does not appear to be war damage to them.

No bumper numbers on the CCKW between the 2 Ward Lafrance wreckers. The Ward on the left has the open cab door on and it is wide open.

Vehicle recovery is what Ordnance Companys did for a living in wartime, much of this was done under combat conditions with Wreckers and Dragon Wagons. It is reported that at the end of WWII, that the US could only account for 70,000 Jeeps out of the nearly 600,000 produced. There was attrition and lend lease.

50 years ago, many of the surplus dealers in the US had fields that looked similar to the photo depicted. A lot of the parts were reused, and some were even sent overseas to foreign Governments.

Joel probably remembers Nate Schwartz in Clinton MA

He had an aeral picture in his office take in 1947 with his place jam-packed with trucks, jeeps, 1/2 tracks and tanks. It must have been something to see!

And Nate was one of the few to find a buyer for each and every part he owned after retirement. There were hundreds of Nate Schwartz yards in the USA.-never again tho. Last saw him at Weare 2002.
