How can I find the hood markings?

How can I find the hood markings for my cckw 353 dump truck?
Serialnumber is cckw 353 399631-H1.
Is this vehicle original with closed cab?
A lot of those vehicles was rebuild after ww2 in Europe. Rebuild with nos parts. Cab, engines and everything in pieces and put togheter.

With a ~400,000 serial number, it would have been an open cab.
Sanding the hood is really the only way to find the hood number.

Sanding the hood takes time but is worth it. I've found that if you sand untill you get too a white marking then just sand around the marking ,following it with light sanding you can usually bring up the figures. Take loads of photos as you go through the layers untill you get to the bare metal.
The bumper/fenders is another good way to find it's unit etc.

yep I know 2 hours of wet sanding got me nothing but 3 layers of paint and sore arms
though it was fun while it lasted
Id say most european returns have been stripped an repainted sometime in ther post war life.

I was lucky on old Betty Boop. The original Air Force flight line yellow was still on her and the black hood markings were still lightly visible on the drivers side of the hood. Good luck as it is a hit and miss thing.

My 1944 CCKW was a Netherlands return and my '44 WC- 54 was returned from France. Both had been sandblasted and reprimed/painted sometime in their post-war existence. The ambulance was easy to determine when it happened as it has a 1962 rebuild tag on the firewall. There were none of the original hood numbers left on either vehicle.
Interestingly, both my Willys MB and Ford GPW had the original hood numbers under 6 or 7 layers of various civilian colors
I suspect they were both stateside during the war.

The previous owner of my CCKW, sanded and painted only the hood, and he found the hood numbers and luckily he took pictures and gave me.
The old stars, two sets on each side
of the hood , are still visible.
No unit markings on the bumbers found though..
