rifle holder

Hi i have a cloesd cab cckw, can anyone tell me if my rifle holder is in the correct position ????? it is located horizontally behind the drivers seat....
where else could it go???

I have an open cab and have 2 rifle racks one on the driver side and one on the passenger side both are vertical.

The Army installed the rack on the Passenger side bolted to the floor and to the Dash just to the right of the Glove box. It prevents efficient ingress/egress. As a young kid at the end of the war riding in our dealerships first CJ-2A with my wooden rifle, my US Army Ranger Uncle Joe showed my friends and I to hold the rifle vertical with the butt beside my right foot. That would be a very sensible method in closed cabs. In the 60s we did the same in our 2 1/2 ton trucks and laid them in back of our M-38A1s.

The open cab truck seems to be more suitable for the rifle holders. I have one in Betty Boop mounted on the passanger side bolted to the back of the cab and to the floor.

That is the factory installed Open Cab location per your TM.

There were two Rifle Holders, GM #2185230, which was seperceded by GM# 2206938 with a zippered canvas cover stapled to it.
If one looks closely at the long flat side of their holder, the staple holes from a canvas cover may still be evident.
They have a way of rotting, or in the case of the one on my MB, I simply removed the cover.

Well you have forced my secret to the surface. There is the original cargo truck, Betty Boop. The tipper will be done in 24087 paint with Air Force markings when restoration is finished,which I am looking for a few parts still and is named Betty Boop Too. My M38 jeep will be finished in Air Force Strato Blue and carry the markings of a B29 group that was at Randolph AFB during the korean War. OK fellows, are you ready for this. The jeep will be named " Boop Boop Ado." My Ben Hur trailer is named Bimbo, the name of Betty Boops dog. I will post photos of Betty Boop Too when she is finished. She is going to be a real beauty.
Oh, the rifle rack is in the cargo truck with the wooden cargo bed.

Somewhere on this site the webmaster posted the Army's installation of the rifle holder on the4X4 Chevrolet. (A couple years ago) It mounted vertically with the back of the holder bolted to the dash to the right of the glovebox. I have that picture in a manual somewhere, but do not remember where.
It is a poor installation as it severely restricts ingress and egress. There really is no good location for the Army Issue WWII Rifle Holder in the Closed Cab trucks as they were just a civilian cab that was hurriedly incorporated on to a badly need truck.

Someone used to make a repair kit for the rifle racks , it was the pad at the top and canvas web strap & pad at the bottom . If anyone could post a link it would be appreciated .

Don't know of a GI repair kit, but Weebie sells something to do with canvas wear strips for a rifle holder.
I am going to guess that it will be scraps of gas can webbing and some rivits. Maybe with a strip of leather on the butt end.

I don't think it was a Gov made kit either , it had to be one of the canvas makers and i believe it was at the Aberdeen show years back that i saw it ,well one more thing to look for in May 08.
