ACKWX ---> CCKWX ---> CCKW

Post by dr deuce »

In looking at the various manuals, you find some strange items:

The ACKWX turned off the horn under BO conditions. I know sometimes I hit the horn button taking a corner with my CCKW and have thought that they should have had the horn button with a guard around it OR turned it off during BO conditions.

The CCKWX had an electric temperature gauge. The ACKWX before it and the CCKW after it had mechanical gauges.

The ACKWX had the rear lights on both sides the same and they were just stop and tail.

The ACKWX had the smaller GMC engine and a 10 and 3/4 inch clutch and a flat flywheel like a Chevy. That meant it also had the simplier Chevy style bellhousing without the male/female mount adapter for the throwout bearing fork ball pivot.

Winter is a great time to look at all the maintenance manuals and parts manuals when you can't be driving your CCKW.....

I have NOS Flywheels with the flat surface such as the ACKWX, they also fit the 1/2 and 3/4 Ton 40s GMC. They have the Four Bolt mounting pattern, and use the same Ring Gear as Chevrolets, CCKWs and other 40s vintage GM products.

Taillights, they did look the same on Left and Right, but they were different in function.
At the pre WWII time of the ACKWX, the Army had not standardized on the WWII Tail lights that all vehicles used from late 41 on. In photos the left and right tail lamps looked identical, as the upper and lower lenses of both were oval. They were different , though on the left, the upper lens was the Black out, and the LOWER was the Stop and Tail with double filament Bulb. There is a shaded filter to diffuse the light and a louvre for the upper lens only, that reflects the light downward. The Right hand also has two Oval Lenses, the upper being the Black out Tail, and the Lower being the Black out Stop, the upper and lower lens have louvers in front of them to reflect the light beams downward.
Confused? It's all in the TM . The CCKWX and CCKWs made up to late 41. also had the same Tail Lamps as the ACKWX. There was a Kit by Guide to convert these to Conventional WWII lighting. All CCKWs and the ACKWXs would have had this upgrade starting about early 1942.

I gotta take a ride with you to see how to hit the horn button when taking a corner. My horn sometimes does not want to blow when going straight ahead, and then only after I have gone way past the person I am tooting at.

RE horn
When my arm goes up over the top and I hit a bump. Maybe I have a more sensitive horn button. Doesn't happen all the time, but has happened enough times to make me wonder.

The ACKWX manual shows the two tail light wired the same way with a stop and running light on each side connected in parallel with the light on the other side.

So if someone wanted to get rid of 'the gmc clutch' they could install one of these and use a 10.75" Chev clutch which is quite available today from places like Jim Carter Antique parts. Correct?

I could be, but I try not to get into conversions, as the only way to stay out of trouble in my opinion, is to stay with "Factory" installation. It gets confusing, especially at the parts counter, and may stretch the patience of even the nicest NAPA Counterman. It would take an hour or two to research and compare the GMC Clutch and Throwout Bearing part numbers, and then compare them to Chevrolet, etc.

These NOS Flywheels sell good in Hemmings, as they go back to late 30s GMC light trucks.
