Here are some comments (with my poor english
) about this truck:
I bought it in 1989 for my 20th birthday. This truck was a “chassis truck”, serial number cckw353 187053-2, that was converted to carry wood out of the forest by its previous owner. So it was missing its bed, spare wheel carrier, battery box and of course troupe seats and canvas. Engine wasn’t running and the owner said that only the head gasket was in need to be replaced. In fact, a valve was probably loosened sometimes and fall into a cylinder, what ruined one piston and the head. So, the engine had to be replaced by another old one that I had to rebuild because it was seating in an open field for about 20 years. All pistons and valves were stoked and everything inside the engine had to be removed, cleaned, checked or replaced. Gearbox + transfert case were in bad condition and had to be replaced by parts coming from a spare truck. Brakes and hydrovac had to be fully rebuilt too.
The cab was in pretty good shape and the original 1st type wooden steering wheel was still being there. The original star was found on the left door and has been painted in same size at the same place after restoration. It took me about 5 years to complete the restoration. I’m driving this truck now for about 15 years and really like it. I took it to Normandy in 2004 for the 60th birthday of Overlord for a one week tour.
