Re: winch cable
I went to a local commercial fishing supply house looking for 1/2 wire rope ( as original ) the fishing industry uses 5/8" instead of 1/2"...but they had a partial spool left over in the wharehouse but it only had slighly more than 200' feet on it...so that's what I'm runnin'.
As built they had 300' of 1/2",later in production the lenght was reduced to ( IIRC ) 150' of 1/2"
Hope this helps
John

Re: winch cable
I am nearly certain that I recall reading that the original cable had a fiber core, rather than steel. You might check out this supplier:

A cheaper alternative I read somewhere is to contact an elevator contractor and inquire about buying used elevator cable. I've heard that as long as they understand it won't be used in a life safety application (like an elevator), they'll be more willing to sell it or even give it away.
