Help I'm stuck in 4th gear !!!

Post by rixtoys52 »

Well I was headed to a military vehicle gathering at the Pima Air and Space Museum here in Tucson and when I shifted into 4th the trans stuck in that gear and would not come out. I have a 5 speed CCKW trans in my newly aquired Chevy 1 1/2 ton . I had to take out the drive shaft and tow it home. I've only owned the truck for a couple of weeks and it gave no hint that there was anything wrong. Any help would be really apprecieated

Sounds like the front mainshaft bearing has collapsed.

I took the top off in the truck and it appears that the shifter and rails are where the problem is located. I put the top in my vise on the bench to see what I could see. The stick freed up but it's still not right . It moves the shift rails but hard and it seem too loose in the tower.
Does anyone have any pics or tech info TM ??? Or ideas on what too look for?
I would like to take it apart to see if something is broken above the shift rails.
What TM covers the transmission in the CCKW?

Well here is a pic of the top anyone got any ideas on how to take it apart? The shift lever seems to be out of its socket or it broke off I can't tell as of yet.
Again thanks for any help.

Thank you Fernando. A Picture is worth a thousand words. That is the transmission in my truck. What book did the diagrams come from ? The pictures showed me the stick is not broken, just out of position.
I am at work on the road and will be home late so will be working on the transmission tomorrow. (11-13).
Thanks for your help.

OK got 'er going again today. It was the stick jumping out of the fork in the shift rail. It is really worn and I will have to get another stick. Thanks to Fernando for the pics. I found a CD of the TM10-1563 on Epay and ordered that so should have some more info soon.
Fernando do you have any more pictures of your disassembled transmission ?
