Holes in Chevy bed question

Holes in Chevy bed question

I just got home with a 9' all steel bed for my Chevy, and noticed that it has the correct holes on the right side for the pioneer rack. They are 36" apart.
My question is that on the left side of the bed, directly across from the pioneer rack holes, there is another similar set of 4 holes. They are placed directly across the bed from the pioneer rack, but are only 34 1/2" apart. Any guess to what they were for? Surely not a second pioneer rack?
