Hi,
I'm looking for info and photos on replacement GMC 270 engines during WWII,specifically details of the crates the engines were shipped in.
Thanks!
Matt.

Hi Matt
Manny Rogers had one mounted to a heavy timber cradle a few years ago.
You might try contacting him thru this forum, hopefully he can send you pic's and related info as well.
Hope this helps.

Hi Matt
There is a picture of of two American GI'S removing a GMC 270 engine from the crate at a vehicle reconstruction depot Normandy France, its on page 12 of The Book GMC A Universal Truck By Boniface .The crate has had its sides broken down but it does show the two wood braces holding the motor in a up right position .

Hi John,
Thanks I'll send Manny a PM.
Jim,Tim,
I have seen this pic,in fact it's what prompted me to ask the question!.
I'm thinking of using a tired 270 and building a replica shipping crate for display.
Matt.

Matt,
There is a small Army manual titled "Assembly Operations" - GMC Type 270 Engines. Form # X-4405. It was published by GMC Truck and Coach Div. This was for CCKW and DUKW replacement engines. I think the manual came in the crate with the replacement engine.
The crated engines included in addition to the engine, many small boxes of components that allowed the configuration to be changed to match the truck or DUKW arrangments.
It has the details you are looking for, including phantom illustrations of all the packing plus carton numbers etc except no crate fabrication dimensions. The copy I have is dated 1944. 5"x7" format about 45 pages
I'll scan some pic's and E mail them to Weasel Nut so he can post them. I'm still having trouble with inserting pic's on the board.
Get out your engineer squad carpenters tool chest and go to it.
Have fun

Hi Guys,
Thanks for all the info!
CatMan,I'd love to see pics from the manual!!,if you could scan it onto a disc I'd be happy to cover all costs and I can copy a couple of my rarer CCKW manuals in return.
Matt.

270 Engine in the Crate
OK Boys, here goes the second try. This should be illustrations from the maunaul of the REUSABLE shipping crate and packing. I'll try and reduce the image size for a better look.

Hope this helps! (Thanks to Kees51 in Holland for the help on how to post)
