cckw winch mods pics

Post by awg »

In answer to question from eagle-eyed observer, and as can be clearly seen on the last set of photos, my winch is not
the standard factory arrangement.

This only became apparent to me long after I owned it, (mainly by
photos off this CCKW site i think.)

I have given thought as to what to do with respect to originality in
this matter and have come to the conclusion that for the time being
at least, I will probably leave it as is, for several reasons.

I do have some questions about operation and maintenance,
and these may be of interest to others who have bastardised gear,
or just from an engineering perspective. In slight answer to a previous thread re adding winches to a non-winch truck, I would recomend against,
but I believe mine may be initially a non-winch

I will post a couple of other photos later, once I have worked out how
to shrink the pics from my new digicam, from giant sized 1200 pix
to the scanned photos you see here which are 350pix.

What has been done will probably make all purists shudder, so brace yourself.

1)The frame rails have been cut 3 inches in front of the spring hangers.

2) 1/2" steel plate has been welded aross the frame to mount and brace

3)the original non-winch bumper sits ON TOP of this, on the frame,
and is very heavily braced to 4 points further back on the frame.

4) A complete original CCKW or DUKW winch has been used (I think),
it is modified in the engagement lever, and has a capstain on one end,
and mountings for another on the other side.

5) The front bumper is a cut down original winch bumper ( maybe)
or it may be a rough copy, the metal is 3/8" thick on this, which seems
a little more heavy duty than original.

6) very heavy duty fabrication is bolted together to mount that back
to the non-winch bumper fab.

Several people have looked at this now, a bit of head scratching,
some factoids to come out of this..

It is a very impressive piece of engineering, and looks good

These mods were performed by Transfield on many of there trucks,
I am not entirely sure why, but the job of my truck was in part to
winch the high voltage power lines between mountain tops and to erect the towers, during the construction phase. I was told that the CCKW winch
was "too slow"...mine has a hydraulic system fitted, and previously a hydraulic winch apparently, and this was to overcome the slow speed.

An old fellow looked at it and told my friend that the way my winch was set up " would overcome the problems they had with them originally"
I did not talk to him so i dont know what that meant.

My winch also rotates in the opposite direction to the normal CCKW
winch...it runs 2 speed cable in OVER THE TOP, not from under
the bumper fairlead like an original, this can not be changed by re-wrapping the cable as some peopke have told me..you loose the 2 speed in, if you do that. I have been told a DUKW winch runs in reverse to
a CCKW. I would prefer it to run under, as the cable is not restrained by a fairlead over the top, I have jury rigged a temporary, till I decide exactly what to do.

Hope this is not to boring, I probably need to strip it down, as it is leaking a lot of oil, more soon..tony Image[/img]http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/5231/scan0002ar4.jpg[/IMG]Image[/img]

Hi Tony
Well if you were going to cut and modify your CCKW to add this winch ,I for one would certainly "shudder"
But since it is already there why not run with it
It is certainly part of this vehicle's history 8)
The gear box end looks like Garwood/Heil
The coaster brake and declutching lever is rotated 90 degrees from all installations I have ever seen.
Yes the DUKW winches rotate in the reverse of the CCKW
But the shaft on your winch is to long for the CCKW and DUKW and many others as well.
The shaft looks like you could mount another head on the "pass." side
Does it have a key way near the end ?
The shaft can be easily removed from the winch and the driven gear can be pressed off .
Could you have a custom made shaft?
Has the shaft been lenghtened?
There were several other WW2 vehicles with long shafts and capstains on both ends ( prime movers ) White Corbett Dia T
Being "down under " several British vehicle possibilities come to mind as well.
I have a post war Dia T with a 35000 lb Garwood winch with 2 capstains ,mounted behind the cab (tractor model w/cable fold gooseneck) I measured the shaft and it is the same dia. as my CCKW 's shaft and the gear box is nearly identical in size also The rotation is the same as yours.
You should be able to find modern seals to fit the input shaft
Use gear oil in the case axle grease to control rust on the cable and other areas, There should be grease fittings where the shaft passes thru the support bushings also.
Hope this helps
