How do I tell if a engine is a 261 or a 235 without taking it apart??

The 261 (US) has two large fittings on the drivers side that connect to hoses like for power steering in a 60's car. These go to the oil filter hung on the intake manifold.
On a 261, ALL the oil from the pump passes out of the engine block and thru this filter before re-entering the engine. It is a full flow oil filter system like a modern engine.
You can buy a remove oil filter mount/bracket that will accept a spin on modern filter and mount it low in the chassis.

I don't think so.
The really BIG oil hoses give it away. The block where they come out is slightly different.
If you ever find one of these engines and it is salvagable, BUY it! They are hard to come by.
