REPLACING REAR MAIN SEAL

The rear main seal on my 44 CCKW is starting to leak pretty badly.Can this be replaced without tearing the entire engine out of the truck?

Hi Harold
The Short Answer, Yes it can but the results maybe short lived
The Long Answer,
I've done it using a rear main seal removal kit that I purchased at Napa
Slipped the new seal in, and the leak stopped

for about 10 miles of use and then it leaked as badly as before

Beleive me it sure wasn't worth the hassle of digging out the old seal( that's were all the work is )
I decided to pull and rebuild the engine ( it needed it anyway) and I replaced the seal during the crankshaft assembly
After about 1500 miles the seal started weeping again ,although not badly (yet)

The problem is the journal on the crank where the seal sits/rides, gets worn and rough and doesn't seal well any more
And secondly when these engines were developed " asbestos " was the material used for the seal. And it's present day replacment is not up to the task.
I have had good luck using the replacement journal sleeve avail, for the front ( timing cover ) seal however

Where can I get a rear main seal to replace my leaking one? I've got the engine out and the clutch out and would like to replace it.

Also need overhaul gasket kit!

There is a rear main seal in the gasket set if you buy a complete set.
Give Frank von Rosenstiel a try
I got a set from Sam Winer a couple of years ago ,French made I believe but a set made before the Asbestos ban so I got a good rear main seal

He advertizes in MVM.

Try my friend Joel Gopan,I have seen his parts stash if its green he's got it,he eats breaths and shi#% OD

I am thinking about pulling my 270 in the future and giving it a complete fresh gaskets overhaul , and I know he has plenty of rear main and oil pan gaskets all original nos, and the one thing I can assure of if it comes from Joel it will be right and it will fit as it was intended too
