Who made the nuts?

Post by Bill_Wolf »

As the CCKW brake issue becomes more heated over on the G503...I would like to deviate a little from that Sticky problem and discuss lug nuts. Specifically the outers.

I have 3 different outer nuts on my truck. BUDD, B&O, and one labeled "V".

What is the "V" one all about.

Can anybody elaborate on this very pressing issue?

My Norwegian return 353 air-portable was built in 6/45 then rebuilt here in 1952 and had the Norwegian style tires over there so it does not surprise me that the nuts are mixed.

Wheels on the truck have dates from 10/41 thru 6/45 and there a couple that have the Budd Logo and are undated.

Thank you for your input.

Bill

Neil,

"Norwegian Tires" is a slang term used by people in the hobby to refer to the European sourced mud and snow tires that are found on most "repatriated" CCKW's.

My speculation is that NDT's were/are in short supply, MDAP/NATO wanted to use local suppliers, inventory issues, and the tread pattern was better in the snow than the NDT's

The tires on my truck were a mix of Viking and Semperit with 3 of them being retreads.

Here is a picture of a Viking tire

Are these tires available cheap? They would look better on my German conversion.

Unknown about US availability in new.

I would imagine you could find used.

They would look more wehrmacht like on a German truck.

I have a bunch of used ones. 2 excellent, 3 real good, 3 fair and 1 badly cupped. (I already promised 1 or 2 to Doc Brit if he drives up to pick them up)
