The wood on my steering wheel is split at the connecting bolts.
I don't think I can squeeze it back together without removing the bolts.
It looks to me as if the "bolts" are actually solid rivets and may be impossible to remove.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

There is a vendor at the old car show in Hershey PA who remakes wooden steering wheels for old cars. He did real nice work and I think it was about $250.00 a wheel. It might be worth looking into.

not 100% sure, if on this forum tho, try search facility.
my steer wheel is not a wood original,so this is in theory, i have never even seen a real GMC one!
it should be possible to remove the rivets by a combination of drilling and using an air or electric die grinder to collapse the rivet 'just' enough to drive them out.
the wood can be repaired usually with good woodworking skills being needed...the other post mentioned along the lines of using similar sawdust and epoxy mix, to fill surface damage and polish up with wet&dry.
mentioned very acceptable results.
if rivets can be reused, otherwise try specialist rivet supplier.
