A CCKW oppurtunity

Post by rml1708 »

I found a local CCKW that appears to be a LWB closed cab. Looks very original and is fully functional as is.

Here is the owners comments: This truck is basically 100% complete and appears to be very original. If you have restored cars before, you know how important that is. You pop the hood on this truck and it is very close to the way it came from the factory. Original air cleaner, carb, etc. It even has an old time oil can mounted on the firewall. I am by no means an expert in these vehicles. The only things that look non-stock to me are the fuel pump was converted to electric versus mechanical and an aftermarket toolbox was mounted on the left side. Both of these would be very easy fixes if you wanted to go back to completely stock.

The issues I know of are:

1) The start needs rebuilding. The drive kicks out quickly rather than staying engaged and turning the engine. I usually just give it a shot of fluid and it starts right up. The engine runs great once started.

2) The exhaust manifold leaks. It appears that the prior owner used red high-temp silicone rather than a gasket. It might just require a new gasket.

3) The front wheel cylinders leak. I am told that this is a very common problem with these trucks. I would plan on rebuilding the wheel cylinders and cleaning or replacing the shoes as necessary. The brake pedal is high and solid and has stopped fine for me. Even though is stops good, safety needs to come first. I definitely recommend that you plan on inspecting and repairing the brakes as necessary.

He is asking $3500. Sounds like a decent deal to me. Any inputs or comments?

Thanks,

Robert

Hey Robert I saw the listing as well nice looking truck. Should be a tool box in the back panel of the bed below the tailgate otherwise it's an M series bed

That is why I am asking for input. I know a little about the WC series and a little about the jeeps, but nothing about the CCKW stuff. I like the fact a that it is basically a turn key deal. Yea it has a starter problem and the front brakes leak. the brakes are the first thing to be looked over on any new purchase so it looks good to me. I also like the fact that it is a closed cab truck. With owning two open vehicles its time for a closed cab.

I am no expert but that looks like a later M series bed. I allways thought the WW2 ones had a tool locker on the back and an indentation for the fuel filler pipe. I sure could be wrong though!

Nice looking restoration candidate.

Love the suicide knob!

The bed is not original for the CCKW, but is not a major problem unless you are being club judged.

Remember the highest expense is in tires and brakes. Brakes can run to $1000 with tires $2000.

Did you take it for a moderate distance drive? Did it overheat?

I ran a bed like that on my closed cab for years till I found the correct body. Worked just fine though a little tough with mirrors due to be 4" wider on each side.

The manifold may be a problem. If it has eaten the head or the manifold, $$ may be involved. It has been my experience in 50,000+ miles that wheels rotting out/finding good ones and exhaust manifolds are the biggest problems with these trucks. The brakes have been brought down to a dull roar since brass and stainless sleeved wheel cylinders as far as problems go.

Good luck. Let us know how you make out

Correct beds turn up on the west coast now and then, you can always replace it later, and probably get a buck or two for the M series bed

I hope you bought it already
