Death Shake!
Hi. I am looking for any information on tie rod pins, bushings etc. for our SWB Split axle CCKW.
We would get a little shimmy at higher speeds which I could live with, but recently, after going ove some RR tracks, I got the Death Shake. You know, The one that makes you Crap your Pants! Ha!....Yeh, It wasn't fun. Anyways, I can tell she hasn't been right since. And we have 3 weeks until our Florida Rally. If anyone has parts for sale or info on #'s it would be Great!

I think Frank Rosen* in Canada has them

Hi there, I have had this, same type of truck SWB split axles, all I did was to replace the king pin bearings (4 of) top and bottom ones on both sides of steering knuckles, once done make sure you have the correct pre-load on the bearings by adjusting the shims under the caps and that was it for me, after that you could go as fast as you liked and on problems at all. By the way the old ones were badly worn pits where every roll sat in a straight ahead position. The tyre pressure also is important.

Thanks! for the advice guys! I have emails to 2 parts dealers. I'm gonna see what I can get on short notice as we have our Rally coming up here Mid February. She'll drive as is but I don't wanna tear her apart and have her not make it because of 1 little missing part!
R Cubed, did you have your truck in Normandy this past June? If so post a pick, I may have seen/talked to you.

Yep, I was over there with my CCKW 352 and some friends with a Dodge WC52 and Triumph 5SW bike, stayed at Etreham camp site with the main Military Vehicle Trust. We drove in convoy from Asnelles to Arromanches on the beach, Asnelles is about 2 miles West of Arromanches while we were on the beach in convoy I had dual front wheels on just to show off ...

Here are some pics of the king pin bearings I took out of my truck and the new ones which went in.
There are 4 sets to the front axle but the bottom 2 get the most punishment as these take the weight of the truck, the top 2 are only there to tightly locate the hubs on the axle, just remembered the shims which are between the bearing and the cap which retains the bearing must be the same thickness, in other words there must be the same number and same thickness top and bottom otherwise you move the centreline of the wheel hub up or down in relation to the half shaft in the axle this is bad.....
Old bearings notice the pitting and dents in the outer race. Nice little pic of the new bearings and boxes Outer race assembly with part number Inner bearing Assembly with part number

I take it those are the #'s for the bearings, 41286 and 41125? That will help allot! Thanks.

Yes the numbers on the Timken boxes are the numbers you need, just remember 4 of each to do whole axle, see my post above which I have edited and added some more information.PlainJaneDoe wrote:Olive Oyl!...Ha!

Also you will need a shim kit so you can set the pre-load on the hubs correctly.

We were over in France for the 55th and got in to the main square in Bayeux then took part in the procession through the cobled streets in the centre of Bayeux as they did in 1944 for the liberation, wow such an experience all the people waving and cheering so good, the thing that will stick in my mind for ever was as we were coming to the end of the street there was an old lady there waving and crying so much, you could see it in her eyes she was living it all again....

Yep!..It was the 50th anniversary actually. I was 18 then. We rode with our brit friends in their truck and jeep. We then purschased the CCKW from them. We tell people we had to took it for a test drive though England & France before deciding to buy it! I remember that parade well as I drove one of the leading jeeps out of the Mud City camp with the column of tanks behind me. Holy COW! The Site and Sound of That as Awesome!
