split axel bearing nuts?
I'm having to dig into one of my axles because it is so packed with oil that it locks up, I have friend with all the big truck tools that I can borrow but I would like to know the proper size so I'm not making a bunch of trip up to their shop, it's a 41 split axle truck, I tried to back the adjuster off but it didn't help,I can only imagine there is just so much gunk packed it there that the drum can turn, I look through the manual tonight and couldn't find a size for the socket, I could use the cold chisel method but I try to refrain from being BUBBA!

Re: split axel bearing nuts?
Bob,
I think you will find two different types and sizes of wheel nut wrench required for the split type.
The front axle is an Octogon 3 7/16 Inch - KD #2452 or OTC #1911
The rear axle nut is a Hexagon 2 3/4 Inch - KD #2440 or OTC #1932
Double check the hex vs Octogon configuration, but that's what my notes say. The sizes are difficult to find in the manuals.
Use the right wrench don't spoil something with the hammer and chisel method.

Re: split axel bearing nuts?
Thanks, I opened it up the other day and bubba had already been there, they actually used the cheisel on the oil seal part of the other nut, which of course ruined the seal which caused the brakes to get all gunked up, but luckily I have two extra axle sets so I was able to find a nice clean drum and brakes shoes, I picked the best set of nuts to go with them as well. so the truck is back on the road, at least it's not locking up now, I'm still struggling to get the pedal up, next I'll have to pull a master cylinder off one of the parts truck and go through that.
