hood number color
The 41 that I'm building as my new yard truck has gotten it's quicky paint job, I was able to pull the hood numbers up very nicely, first in white then below that in blue, it was the same number 454000 so I have to assume it was the original number. I was wondering when that number was applied,at the factory or when it was delivered to the troops, and did they repaint in white when they went over seas, I have a can of the proper blue but I haven't decided what would be more correct, it's just going to be a yard truck but I would still like to get some what close to proper, any thoughts. Thanks,Bob.

Re: hood number color
As it left the factory Blue Drab
A field repaint ,or a post war rebuild,or a motor pool hood replacement, most likely white
So which do YOU want
Hope this helps

I believe the jeep you are refering to is a model and not a period photo.

I believe I saw where some one restored a jeep and set it up as a WW2 crated jeep, could be that picture?

Richard,in 1939/40(ACKWX period)the USA wasn't in war yet.Its first action in war was in Torch operation in november 1942.In that opportunity was baptism of fire of general Dwight David Eisenhower.USA was bombed by Japan in Pearl Harbor in december 1941.I was readind Bryce Sunderlin italian article that says in finish of 1939 it has only twelve 2 1/2 ton civily ACKWX,notice in pic w/o identification number in front bumper.

Re: hood number color
The directive to paint the hood numbers Blue drab came out in 42 as posted
CCKW production started before that. as previously posted
That's why Bryce's article states first white hood numbers THEN blue drab..... again as previously posted
Fernando,
I'm confused as to what the confusion is ??????
Hope this helps

Re: hood number color
From all the reply I think I have it figured out, if it left the US for a combat theater then it most likely would have been repainted white, but if it stayed in the US it probably would have been blue till the truck received it's first repaint, here's a picture of the truck, while not a real restoration it looks better then the faded OD that was on it, the bed is a too long M-series that I plan on shortening when I have some time, bare in mind it's just a yard truck, a very handy one at that!

I am not confused.Don't know why you are.Registration marking(manufactorer)=blue-drab and identification marking(unit)=white.

Re: hood number color
Still not sure about those dates, the CCKWX that I have in the yard was built 12/16/40 number 4997, the original hood number in blue drab is 4200575, I don't know if someone has the build number/hood number situation figured out but as far as I can tell these are all original numbers for this truck, like I said when I started this thread my yard truck which was built in 41 has blue hood numbers, both of these were sanded through to primer, so until I see a picture of the first CCKWX to roll off the line with hood number that we can read and determine what color they were I don't think we'll ever really know!

Re: hood number color
While I was thinking about it I ran out and shot a picture of the "W" I think it's pretty clear what color it was.

Re: hood number color
I thought we were discussing "hood" / "registration" numbers as opposed to "unit numbers 'Fernando Mendes wrote:I am not confused.Don't know why you are.Registration marking(manufactorer)=blue-drab and identification marking(unit)=white.
My bad

So, Bob what "unit" numbers are you gonna put on the "ole girl " ?
Hope this helps

Re: hood number color
I'm not really sure, what ever I mark my half-track for is what every thing else will get marked for, most likely 4th armored, I've found a bunch of 4th armored memorabila, since everyone does third armored I figured I'd be a little different! I'll have to dig through all my books and pictures and find some thing I like!
