Hydrovac brake booster repair/ replace
Hello, my name is Peter and i am down in Tasmania, Australia. I have just picked up a 1942 cckw for a restoration project that is still in running condition. However the brakes are not working so i have removed the hydrovac for a look. I think the hydrovac is both seized up and has a torn bladder as when the master cyl has been filled the brake pedal is quite solid but no brake action whatsoever. When i removed the hydrovac today i also drained at least a litre of brake fluid out of the top vaccuum port on the chamber! I have seen pics of a variety of hydrovacs fitted to the cckw, and mine is the one with the vaccuum cannister which is approx 14 inches long. I would be greatful for any help with the rebuilding of this unit including leads on spare parts or replacement units to suit. I am a fitter machinist so have reasonable ability, but have not worked on one of these trucks before, and dont want to delve into the booster without some info. I would believe there will be a large return spring in there as well... Thanks in advance for your help. kindest regards, Peter de Vries.

Re: Hydrovac brake booster repair/ replace
Replacement as opposed to re-build is in my opinion the least troublesome way out, " useable Kits" for the dual diaphram models are scarce and often times the chambers are beyond beyond help.
Ross Prince is the "CCKW parts vendor" that is probably the closest to you.
Here stateside Bob at Vehicles of Victory has fresh Hydro-vacs avail for your truck.
Several "brake warehouses" also carry suitable replacements.
Hope this helps

Re: Hydrovac brake booster repair/ replace
Thankyou for your help, I have contacted Ross, who seems to have an enormous listing of parts available for the cckw. I will pull my booster apart first for a look and go from there. I am also looking for a pdf manual on ebay , however the plate in my cabin lists parts manual TM-10-1146 and maintenance TM-10-1147 and i cannot find these exact ones for sale. From memory the closest on ebay is TM-10-1563. MIne is a closed cab and was sold as a 1942 model. I just found the chassis number though and it is CCKW-353-64876-A2. Can anybody identify the year from this number? and would the manual on ebay (TM-10-1563) be suitable for this truck with the closed cab? Any help appreciated, regards Pete.

Excellent!! Thankyou very much for providing that link. That is the exact hydrovac that is fitted to my truck. I will pull it apart now and have a look at how bad it is inside... Regards from Pete.
