I need a govenor for the ol CCKW 270.
I ask a vendor, BY PART NUMBER FROM THE TM for the govenor I need. 'Yes I have it' is what his reply is.
I order it, it arrives. I'm sure it will fit, but its not that part number I ordered. It looks similiar, but its obviously a post war part. Says 1953 right on the box. Sure is NOS, but not NOS for the part # I gave.
I mentioned this on the G503 about vendors swapping post war NOS when a part is ordered by part number. I was tarred and feathered. I was told to give the vendor a chance to fix it. But thats not really an option when a part that cost $20 costs $15 to ship. You still lose.
The vendor did not take a credit card, so I don't have much recourse but to either 1. eat the cost to ship it back or live with it till the correct one is found.
I am so, VERY, VERY dissapointed with not only jeep, but now CCKW vendors not being up front with what you are getting.
For the people who are gonna chime in with why I should expect a war time production part 60+ years after the fact I have one simple, undeniable asnwerd: THEY SAID THEY HAD THE PART, THATS WHY.
So very dissappointed.

Vendors do not necessarily swap part numbers, but sell the part by application.Your part may have been reboxed by the Army, this did happen. Recently, I unwrapped a sealed 1960s dated M-38 Exhaust Manifold with the proper M-38 numbers, guess what? it is a NOS GPW "F" Marked Exhaust manifold. After 64 years, not all early numbers are available, and what was sent may be an improvement over what was listed in the manual. If you post the King Seely Number that is printed on the cover, I will give you an expert answer. I have the spec numbers for CCKW, not all CCKW Governor numbers are listed in the SNL. It may very well be just what is correct for your truck. FYI, there are not many places offering NOS CCKW Governors, they are scarce. Mine came from the same place you bought yours and it is correct. CCKW parts can be found in Gov't pack for the CCKW dated right up into the Eighties. I have NOS 1960s LWB Small Neck Gas Tanks, and NOS 1989 Dated GI Carburetors(it is the early style WWII Die Cast, and makes for one of the smoothest running CCKWs around). There is nothing wrong with a late date NOS part if it is factory spec. My Muffler on my CCKW is dated in the 50s, but is GI Issue and works just fine. Matter of fact not all CCKWs sound the same as there is a difference in the resonance between manufactuirers. Mine has the nice GMC sound that I remember from the 40s-50s and is music to my ears.

No, the box was properly marked, there could be NO question what was inside of it.
The part # I asked for and the part # that arrived was unquestionably different. There really is no explination other than the need to dump a part and get rid of what was on the shelf instead of getting the proper part that was asked for.

You still may have a superior and correct part. Was the part number you used correct for the Carburetor and Distributor set up? There were at least 3 CCKW governors, which were carefully matched to the distributor and carburetor being used. gotta tell ya, there there is not a surplus of CCKW Governors on the market to just literally "dump" them. The latest number superceeds the earlier versions, and even though it is in a box dated 1953, it may be the type that appeared in 1943. NOS CCKW Governors are hard to find.I seem to remember you had a combination of two early Die Cast carburetors mixed together that resulted in an idle mixture screw both on the throttle body and the float chamber, and that would result in a carburetor that could not be adjusted for idle. did you ever get that straightened out?

The ORD 9 calls for GM-2135779. The part I got was MON-753-52. The govenor was made by Monarch in 53. On the box there is a number in marker 2136480. A GM part #? Still not what I asked for. The govenor on the truck now is correct, less the butterfly. It is marked with the correct part number and has a distinctive look that cannot be mistaken for what I got.
The ORD I used was dated 15 July 1945 (Portrayal Press copy).
Since I do not have a later dated TM (was a CCKW TM dated as late as 53?) I Cannot cross reference the part to that timeframe.
The govenor had an info sheet listing it as 'Used on GMC Engines, Type 248 and 270'
One could argue that the 270 engine was in production in 53 and later, so it its a correct part, for a 50's era 270. Granted that all the big chain stores (NAPA) would have 270 parts, from the 50-60's, but thats not what I asked for.
My carb is a complete early style die cast with the correct air cleaner. It idles fine with either govenor. I have a late style cast iron carb with the correct air cleaner, but either way the truck idles fine with either carb or govenor.
But my e-mail to the vendor did not ask for that. I asked for a specific PN, for a specific application. I do not care if the part is or is not for a 270. I care that the part I ordered, as spcifically as I could possibly order it, was not what I got. And that vendors use the term NOS a little to losely.

I 'believe' that the 50's 270 has a different manifold and carb base/carb.

Governor has nothing to do with Idle, it works on a vacuum velocity principle. 2135779 is designed for use with the 270 using the Vacuum Advance Distributor, it has a little thing in it called a transfer valve for operatiing the vacuum control, but can be adapted to 270 using Mechanical Advance distributor by adding pipe plugs. 2135779 was not delivered with new CCKWs, it was a replacement governor to be used with either type distributor. 2135779 was discontinued as a service part prior to 1943. It was replaced by Governor GM-2136480, as by 1943 the majority of CCKW engines in service no longer used vacuum advance distributors. The CCKWX was the major user of Vacuum advance distributors. The GM Number on the Monarch Governor is correct for your situation. NOS CCKW governors are scarce. 2136480 will only work correctly on the CCKW 270 engine. The Monarch brand superceeded the King Seely. I looked for 3 years for NOS CCKW Governors before I found any. GM had service bulletins authorizing the 2136480 for all Mechanical Advance engines Dated Nov 43.
