the trucks larger than a CCKW had double reduction diffs. The NO Mack has a triple reduction front axle. Power to the front wheels is provided by a gearing arrangement that has bevel gears concentric with the steering kingpins. The 2nd reduction is the axleshaft from the diff to the kingpin gear. The 3rd reduction is from the lower kingpin bevel gear to the gear attached to the wheel. A VERY interesting design! The same system was used on the post war M123 10 ton Mack tank transporters.
