Be very careful when working under the hood of your CCKW/Chevrolet on windy days. The support that holds the hood open may release from the vibrations caused by the wind and you will be injured. These are 60 years old and dangerous. I have had it happen, and my support is NOS. I was checking my timing, and had the RH Side Panel removed and my head was down inside the engine compartment and I was trying to get a good view of the Timing Hole in the Flywheel Housing. GUILLOTINE! GUILLOTINE! This cat's down to eight now.

Thanks for the warning Joel.
Another 'feature' associated with the hood 'holder-upper' is that you should never move the vehicle with the hood in the up position. I moved my shopvan CCKW about 100 feet at a slow rate of speed and now the hood is in the up position permanently! Apparently the bouncing causes the mechanism to overrun the stop and jam very tightly.....

I am always looking for NOS Supports, I only have one NOS as spare. I am going to guess that yours was running out of time. All you need is a Periscope now. It is interesting to hear these little "no no" things that only give the owner one chance. I will add to the list as they come into mind.

Thanks for the info Joel. My hood support does not hold well, so I added a metal rod that lifts up to help keep the hood open. Mounted it on the inside of the driver side of the truck on the panel edge.

The late production GMC M-211 Trucks starting in 1954 went to a "prop rod". They had a seemingly good idea with the two ratcheting slides, but it was a pain to close the hood. We used to kick them with our feet to disengage them. Be glad you do not own an M-211.
