Additionnal brake lights switch

Post by Ledog »

I would like to set an additionnal brake lights switch on my CCKW to increment security. I saw this article from Dr Deuce on the website. ( http://www.cckw.org/6_to_12_volt.htm )
dr deuce wrote:The 6 volt coil and condenser are fine. Buy an ignition resistor for a 1957 Chevy PU truck and install it under the dash in the line feeding the coil. If you want, install a 1957 Chevy brake light switch on the passengers side so that it follows the starter linkage (part over bellhousing) as you step on it. Connect this switch across the ignition resistor. It will start better when cold. This is what they use to do before electronic ignition, i.e. short out the ignition resistor when starting.

While you are at it, I install the same switch on the drivers side for the stop lights. Again it follows the pedal and the minute you press on the pedal, the stop lights come on. A much better setup.
I would need one of those brake light switch and further details about how to mount it. What does these 1957 Chevy brake light switch look like? How does it work?

Thanks for infos and/or even pictures.

777AAA,

My 2 cents.

You should be able to use any type of mechanical brake light switch. My preference would be a Motorcycle brake light switch as it would survive the elements of Road weather.

Here is a link to a US supplier of aftermarket motorcycle parts. This type should be available from Motorcycle dealers worldwide. The only issue would be making a bracket.

Do you use a push or pull switch?

Is that this type?

That is it.

The circuit is completed when the brake pedal pulls on the spring.

As I said a bracket is the only real issue with this switch.

I use the 1957 Chev pickup switch because it is rated for dual stop lights and possibly a trailer.

A motorcycle switch is rated for one stop light and probably no trailer

The Chev switch is made for pedals thru the floor. I can take some measurements of the 2 mounting hole location.

The advantage of either is that the minute you step on the pedal, the stop lights come on. This is how all modern vehicles work so it gives the maximum amount of warning to the people behind you.
