fuel pump kits

Post by bobc »

I imagine this has probably been asked a million times but I'll ask again. Is there an aftermarket kit available for the GMC fuel pump? Mine dosen't have the primer lever. I have to imagine this is a very common fuel pump, but I was unable to find one at my local parts store, geah imagine that, I looked on VOV and didn't see one there either. I would rather have a new production rather than NOS. I'm getting tired of using my lawn mower gas tank.

I would like to know that too. Only 12 hrs ago was I trying to start the thing but got no fuel coming to the carb. Guess the pump (mine without priming lever, too) is too old and tired.

Which pump do you have? There are 3 Original GM/AC WWII Pumps two are 2 Valve (Small pump with Fuel Bowl), other is 6 valve , larger with Flat Top abot 5" across,(no bowl), or you could have one of the many replacement civilian aftermarket, Carter, Cepac, Kem, etc. I like to buy the GI 6 valve that sometimes is available from surplus dealers that have been rebuilt with fresh components. They are in the range of $90.00-$110.00. there are no commercialy available kits for Factory AC, but there are rebuilders in Hemmings that have newly manufactured components to install in most fuel pumps. Are you sure yours is a GI Pump? I find that a lot of collectors go thru a lot of effort to rebuild their own pump, and find that the kits they bought come nowhere near fitting (you will not always hear those who ended up with the wrong kits admit they should never have tackled the job,) It ain't all that bad, but some kits do not include a new pin(shaft) for the rocker arm, and sometimes there ain't enough material to peen over the washer that retains the pin, and then the fun begins. What happens is that you will be going down the road, and the pin works out of the pump, and you start walking. I keep a couple spares that I bought 15 years ago from Houston Truck and Equipment. You can always go to NAPA and ask for an AC-429 and what you get is one of the several aftermarket brands that AC stuffs into the box. AC no longer manufactures a pump or the 270, and buys from others and puts them in their box. Cost is less than $30.00(no Primer though)
Beware, those of you who have a truck returned from across the sea, as it may have one of those wierd little French GI replacements, there ain't no kits for those.

fuel pump

Post by bobc »

I finally got tired of looking for a kit so I used Joel's part number and tried to get one from NAPA,they couldn't find it,so I went to Parts Plus, gave him the number ,no problem,$26.00,I figured it would be a modern non rebuildable style pump,it's not it looks just like the later style GMC pump,no primer and no sediment bowl but it's a screwed togather pump, but they don't have a kit listing for it! Now see if I can beat the rain and get it installed so I can load some trucks.

Kits went out with the 50s, not cost effective and tie up inventory.

Talking automotive aftermarket in the USofA, there were plenty of aftermarket and rebuilt fuel pumps availible, and AC discontinued their line of kits for the Civilian market. Fleets users such as the Military continued to stock kits. The Ordnance units usually left the carburetor and fuel pump rebuilding to the machinists. I was an ordnance trained machinist. Kits dated before 1957 that were made by AC are risky as the neoprene prior to that date has a short lifespan when used with todays' fuels. They may fail in as little as 10 miles. There are some M-series kits whose components will fit the CCKW 6 valve pump. There plenty of pre 1957 NOS MV fuel pumps laying around over here, and they do not last very long before the fuel leaks everywhere.

We have issues over here with the heavy use of gasoline "enhancements" that are doing a number on internal rubber parts and causing varnish in a matter of weeks.

"Viton" being used as a substitute for rubber seems to be working well but the component is not that old. It seems to be the only problem with buying/using NOS in contact with Gasoline.

Just wondering.
