SPARE TIRES

Ever notice where the spare tire bracket is located on the F-3 and L-2 CCKW Tank Trucks? It is up there between 5' and 6'.

The LWB Cargo was easiest to install/remove. The SWB Cargo isa difficult one to install the spare on, but on a rare day I can still lift it into place.

I have one of the tankers and every time I look at it, I wonder about the sucke...er person I will have to ask to help me lift it up there.....

That is still a ways off, but the tires absorb sunlight and become heavier each year....

The WWII M-1 Kenworth Heavy Wrecker had two spares located on either side of the boom, Dave McQuarrie, one of our mechanics in the 50s was an operator on one in WWII in the 5th Army, he was rugged and had a wicked temper, and he claimed he could toss the spares up on the wrecker body if he was mad enough.
I tried to flip a wheel and tire from a 5 Ton 6X6 into my pick up and slipped on the snow and landed on my nose on the tire, I then picked it up and threw it in. That was 20 years ago, and I was younger and "motivated".

I was changing an M123 (10 ton tank transporter tractor) wheel one time and they are REALLY heavy and have a deep dish on them. I figured if I lost control and it fell on me I would be all gone!

I get use to the 7.50x20's and then handle a 9.00x20 and I am then SOOO glad my trucks use the smaller ones!

The 10 Ton M-123 Wheel is a 10 hole 14.00X24 and weighs in excess of 400#. The WWII M-26 Pacific 6X6 Dragon Wagon Tractor uses the same wheel and Tire. Many of the M-123 Tractors I worked on would have a 1944 dated tire.
