Float for cast iron Carb

Post by Craig Schmidt »

I found that my float leaks causing the motor to flood. I tried some JB Weld and so far so good. I think I should still get a replacment float. Anyone know where I can purchase a float for the late model cast iron carb?

I may have a used one out of a core if you can't find an NOS.

float

J B weld inside a carb sounds scary,in an emergancy I would try it but I have to believe it will break down over time,or worse yet desolve,if nothing else you should be able to solder up the crack with a soldering iron and some good solder,I have repaired several floats over the years this way,if you can't do it your self a radiator repair shop should be able to do it cheaply.JB weld is indeed remarkable stuff,I have used it in many applications where you wouldn't think it would hold up,but inside a carb is questionable. Good luck.

Well its been over 2 months and I decided to check the float. It was scary, the JB weld did not hold up. The weld was pretty much intact but it was pulling away from the float. I cleaned the float up and found a place on the web called www.thecarburetorshop.com. It had some good instructions on how to fix a float. I called him and he actually had a float for the cast iron carb. But at $300.00 for just the float I decided to give fixing it a try. I have now fixed it and tested it, no leaks. Now its time to put the carb back on and give it the real test, but I think I will wait till it gets a little warmer outside.

Hi Craig,

$300.00 for just the float  for that I'd expect a complete carb,NOS in the box in stone mint condition! if I find a spare float I'll send it to you.

Tim,
I followed the instructions that I found on repairing a leaky float. I have not had the time to reinstall it yet to see if it works. Once I find out I will let you know.

Thanks again
