The "new jimmy" on the block...

I knew a guy like that who used to borrow other people's airplanes without asking . We were at an airshow in Victoria , Texas and he showed up in a T28 Charlie model and no one really paid much attention as we all knew he was qualified to fly most anything with wings and was a retired Navy commander that flew F4U's and F6F's. On Sunday the FAA showed up early in the morning to check aircraft and pilots logs and liscense's. As he walked into the hanger he saw the feds checking everyone and he left. In a couple of minutes we heard that big radial engine start and off he went in to the wild blue yonder. We later found out that not only had his liscense been jerked but he was flying a borrowed airplane, without the owners permission. If that were not enough the ship was out of annual and needed a complete expection to be flying.
Oh well I have seen or heard of him in many years either.

Re; "Different about the rear Splash Guard"
I was hoping, with all the attention the Wood Cargo Body gets, (I want one too) that someone with sharp eyes would notice that the braces to the rear Splash Guard were attached to the No.6 body sill, instead of going to the rear to No.8 body sill, which is the norm on the LWB Wood Cargo Body.
Are the holes still there at the rear body sill? According to the SNLs there is only one part number for the rear braces used on the LWB wood body.

The T28 Charlie model was a nice airplane to fly. I never did like the Alpha model. That is the one that sounded like a John Deere tractor.

I grew up on popping johnnies. My grandfather had a cotton farm in Louisiana and we had three old G models, the early ones with no starter and you had to start by turning the big flywheel. 2 old A models, also hand started. By the middle 50's, when I was in high school he bought some newer models with electric starters on them. Wow, what a big change. I love the old John Deere's but flying an airplane that sounds like it is running on only two cylinders is somewhat troubling.

It makes a difference how the exhaust stacks are, Curtis Wright made two nice engines that can sound that way if the exhaust is ducted just Wright. The same R-1820 when in the B-17 is relatively quiet. The T-28, S2 Sentinel, A-20. TBM Avenger, F4F, B-25, all use a Wright R1820, or R2600, sound whacky, and are music to my ears. Them was airplanes.

You are right. I almost bought a B model last year, then passed. It was sold when I got back to that area. I loved those Old G's. Open the pet cock, bring her around to compression stroke, kick your leg up and give it all you had hopeing she would start. We would start on gasoline, then switch over to the green tractor fuel. We never killed them at lunch because when you tried to restart them they would be hot and too hard to turn over by hand. Lots of fun back in the forties and fifties.
