Marking locations on CCKW project

Hey guys,
I was just getting started doing some sanding on the cab of the CCKW open cab im working on. I bought the truck from a local fire dpt. so it is obviously painted thick and red. Anyways, I started sanding on it and under the red is dark blue and it has U.S. AIR FORCE right under the door opening in yellow stencil. Above and about halfway up the side of the cab opening, under the blue paint, there is dark OD and i found USMC in yellow stencil. I also can see where there is ww2 OD under that. What I am curious of, is were these trucks passed around to different branches of the military? And if this is true, would these be correct places for markings to be located? I plan to get pictures of them tomorrow and try to get them on here this weekend if anyone wants to see them. Thanks for your input.

Yes...Trucks were passed around between branches and when retired from service could have been passed on to local/state governments.

Lots of sanding and photograph all your numbers before stripping for repaint.

It is worth it from the history aspect.

There is a page on the main site that talks about how the trucks were supposed to be lettered during WWII.

There have been subsequent changes since then so lettering could be anywhere.

A photographic history of the restoration is most important as you progress. Once you finish the project the truck looks so good, a lot of unknowing people will assume that you bought the truck in that pristine condition from the Army. It is good to have good before and after photos to show how much work you put into the project. It is also the history of the truck with photo evidence, and with the massive amount of useage your truck has had by the military, this is an important record.

yellow/blue/green

Hi Gregg, Welcome to the site. I have a 45 open cab that is currently yellow,but inside the cab is all air force blue,but where they couldn't paint easily like under the floor,it still OD,it's very temping to repaint it airforce blue or flight line yellow,as it would be proper, since it obviously served some time with the airforce. Good luck which ever you do and try to get us some pictures,we love to see other guys stuff! Bob.

Hey, that's cool.

I haven't seen markings there before. Then again, I haven't seen many original USMC CCKW photos.

That is cool, very nice fine. To me it is always interesting to learn the history of these old work horses.
