CCKW 352 TIPPER

Good fellows.

A member in the Norwegian Historical Military Vehicle Club ( www.hmkf.no ) has on hand what he might think is a short wheelbased tipper. The serial number is 214 039 A2 so it place it in february/march 1943 and that is when it was "taken" a bunch of 352's to Gallion All Stell Body Company in Gallion, Ohio to be converted to tippers.
The body on this truck is not the same as those Gallion built ones.
And as we know, there is great possiblility that also other manufacturers were contrackted. But I have zip and zero info on those other firms and what the bodies supplied by them looks like. Anyone who can shead some more light on those?
And all info on short wb tippers is most welcome!!
How many known is there out there today?

The GMC in question is a closed cab, with winch. The winch I guess is not to often seen on short wb tippers.
The cab looks very much like it went of from the factory and I guess there has never been a major rebuild of the truck even if it has a rebuild tag inside the cabin, stating a rebuild in Germany in 1955.
The Norwegian Army can not have used it much since it has not got the "eggblinkers" on the front fenders. That is a common feature on norwegian GMC's.

If you can not answer any of my questions, I would like a discussion on those short tippers anyhow. And also on other "od-ball" GMC's

Tippers are not common today as most were just used up ad abandoned, as far as I can find out. This truck has to be quite rare being a short wheeled base truck with a dump bed on it as most were the long bed trucks. That is a great find .

"The biggest question is if this is a tipper delivered like this....
The body looks almost the same as on the cargo bodied trucks. I would love some info on different bodied tippers...
Anyone who has a TM or a like that have any info in it on the subject? "

Do you have the article from Wheels and Tracks on the 352 tippers? if not I will send it to you.

I'm sorry I still haven't sent you those manuals,I have just been so busy with other projects but I'll sort them out in the next few days and get them sent out.

Anyone knows if there ever was made some pamplets on tippers and their use?? I am thinking on such ting as safety instructions and so on. On the long wb tippers there is the system to prevent users to fill the body to far to the front, and I guess that is not to prevent overloading the truck when traveling, but to prevent the hole truck from capsising when unloading as the body goes up. So I would think there should be som instructions on this somewere.

In looking at the photo your observation that the body is more like a cargo bed is correct. The stake pockets appear to be the solid type used on the cargo bed. The dump body stake pockets have a steel band at the top and at the bottom with the center being open,. I can not see the lever that would have been on the drivers side front with the rod that goes back to release the tail gate.
A photo of the tail gate would be very helpful as the interior of the bed.
I am more familiar with the 353 beds so all of the above is just supposition when it comes to really knowing anything about this truck.

ad you are correct, it is a cargo bed. It has also a cargo bed tailgate.
Guess we need some more info on this truck to be sure if it is an original short wheelbase tipper... Sure it can be an original, but got a cargo bed when reconditioned due to lack of another tipper body.
And this is why I would like more info on serialnumbers on all the trucks you all can get your hands on. It will for sure help answering such questions!!
As mentioned, the serialnumber on this one is in the timeframe for those who went to Gallion to be converted to tippers.

Definately mounted like a tipper body to the frame at the rear. Does the tail gate just release from the top, so that the operator has to unlatch the gate and lower it to dump the load? A tipper gate can unlatch from top or bottom on the 353's.

That's the problem.... The rear tailgate (and the body I guess) is of the "normal" gargo body type (all steeel). Se picture...
And that is why it would be very interesting to find out what other contractor that was used in 1943 at the same time so many short wb GMC's went to Gallion. I am quite sure there must have been some differences in the bodies from contractor to contractor. And it is quite possible that bodies not made of wood just were converted to tippers..
Remember they were in a bit hurry to support the army arround the world.
And for sure, it would also help a lot if anyone have serialnumbers and any other info on tippers!!
And if someone can find just a little clue in a TM..... :!:

Thats a fact and the one thing about old trucksk, there are always exceptions to every rule. That is one interesting truck.

I thought I did find a photo of another short wheelbase tipper, but on closer look at the photo it seems as the body is a bit lower on the frame as on the tipper

Unless it is reinforced, I have a hard time believeing that you could just bolt the hinges to the rear like th epic shows. The body siderails are only sheetmetal.

Here is another one!!

This one is deffenitly a short wheelbased dump truck made by Gallion in Ohio.
Serialnumber is CCKW-352-213175
Body model is GH567AM and body serial is 128860, and it clearly says Gallion Hydraulic Hoist and Dump Bodies.

So now we have at least one in the serialnumber list, and hopefully we will be able to find out more on these dumpers..
