Is there any way to make sure that the rods are back on the lifter without removing the access panel?
Also, the TM calls for a thread compund for some of the valve train bolts... what would be the modern equivilent? I plan on lock titeing them with the blue stuff.

With the cover in place there was no way to ensure that the rod was sitting in the lifter. Gasket goo to the rescue!
I see why the sealer is required. The bolt for the valve brackets is right on top of each spark plug. WIthout some sort of sealer the oil would seep down the bolt and onto your plugs. THe TM notes that the head was redone so the hole is now blind, and causes no issues.
Next is to set valve lash! Whipeee!
