Differential to propellor shaft seal?

What is involved with replacing the seal between the propellor shaft and the u-joint? It looks like a very large nut needs to be removed.

I thought I had a leaking differential cover gasket. When I got under the truck I descovered the leak is coming from a chewed up seal between the U-joint and the differential. The oil is running down the outside and dripping at the bottom of the differential.

I had the same problem. Found that there was nothing in TM9-801 about working on and disassembly of the meatball so I went by the description and pictures in the Chevy G506 manual.

I had to use a 3/4 drive socket of 1.5 inches. The nut was snug but not overly so. The yoke came off with light taps with a hammer. (Note this was a well oiled part from leaking so rust was not an issue. A simple gear puller will work if needed) The end plate with shield is held on by bolts which when removed allows the seal holder to come off and be worked on at the bench.

Inside was a leather oil seal with a second packing material behind it. (By behind I mean toward the yoke. The packing is sandwiched between the housing and the cover).

I had NOS parts from a sealed kit so I did not have to deal with the Rice Rocket parts counter crowd.

It is a pretty straight forward and simple repair.

Be aware that sometimes the yoke is worn as it was with my 42 dump/plow truck and the GO would pass down the splines. I tried a number of things, the only thing that worked was a different yoke.

Also, if the yoke will not come off easily, if you can obtain another yoke, bolt it on, face to face. You can then use the screw and "nut" from a puller installed thru and in between the two yokes to pull the tow of them off.

Do you know what the seal kit is called or stock number? I am trying to find it on the various sites but I don't know what to look for.
